Microfilm & Microfiche Scanning

Microfilm, microfiche and aperture cards are all types of microform. Microform is the process of storing scaled down reproductions of documents and was used to store images such as: books, newspaper and large maps! In today's digital era, microform has almost become redundant with many companies opting to digitise their records.

The transition to a digital archive has left many organisations asking themselves; how do I gain access to the records on my microfilm and microfiche?

Purchasing the scanning equipment to retrieve images may not be the best choice when taking into consideration convenience and cost. The price of microfiche or microfilm readers can be far more extortionate than the actual need for it.

The Benefits of Scanning Microfilm & Microfiche

Protect your records from loss & damage

Both microfilm and microfiche are susceptible to heat, humidity, fire and water damage, and scratches meaning you cannot ensure the safe keeping of critical records. Digital versions of these files can be securely stored in a cloud-based document management system guaranteeing their protection from loss.

Reduce costs

The price of microfiche or microfilm readers and printers can be far more extortionate than the actual need for it. Scanning your microfiche and microfilm eliminates the need to invest in expensive reading equipment. Once your records are digital, they can be easily shared and transferred with a number of employees who require access.

Free up your office space

Scanning your microfilm and microfiche to a digital format frees up office space, which in turn will save your business money. You can use this to funnel into more important parts of your business.

Types of Microfilm

Microfilm Scanning Services

Microfilm are shrunken pages of information which have been placed onto a film reel to save space. There are 2 types of microfilm- 16mm and 35mm reels with each type of reel being used to store different images sizes.

16mm Microfilm Reels

  • Usually holds up to 2,400 images between A4-A3 in size.
  • Document types can vary.

35mm Microfilm Reels

  • Usually hold up to 600 images between A2-A0 in size.
  • Documents are usually large format plans, drawings or blueprints.

Types of Microfiche

Microfiche Scanning Services

The same concept as microfilm, microfiche are shrunken pages of information, but have been placed onto fiche and not film. There are three types of microfiche- 16mm, 25mm and COMBI fiche.

16mm & 35mm Fiche

  • 16mm & 35mm fiche holds A3/A4 size documents and the frame is 6 X4 inches.
  • 35mm fiche simply stores images which are 35mm in width each and 16mm fiche holds images which are 16mm in width each.

COMBI Fiche

  • Holds a combination of 16mm and 35mm images.
  • The frame size is still 6 X 4 inches.

The History of Microfilm and Microfiche

Microfilm and Microfiche date as far back as 1851 when an astronomer called James Glaisher coined the idea. However, it wasn't until 1896 when microphotography, as it was referred to then, was used in practice.

'The New York Times' was the first famous brand to use microform for newspaper preservation on film. Following this, the American Library Association officially endorsed microfilms as a method of information storage. Harvard University Library, having researched the potential of the data storage application, was the first major institution to use microfilm to preserve broadsheets two years later.

Although at the time microfilm and microfiche was the solution to overflowing archive's, in today's digital era, this has almost become redundant with all documents turning to document scanning companies such as Storetec for a digital solution for a faster, safer and more secure way to access information.

Only today do we recognise the disadvantages to microfilm and microfiche storage methods. It was perceived that types of microform could last up to 500 years. We know today that different types of microform can be destroyed or damaged by heat, fire and water meaning they are not an effective method of storage.
